What is a #hashtag anyway?
According to Wikipedia – the correct definition of a hashtag is: a word or an unspaced phrase prefixed with the hash symbol (“#”). It is a form of metadata tag. Words in messages on microblogging and social networking services such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or Instagram may be tagged by putting “#” before them, either as they appear in a sentence, (e.g., “New artists announced for #WahaBeat “) or appended to it.
Bottom line: It makes you cool.
Okay, better bottom line: It gets you found.
Hashtags can get your posts that you put on a social networking site found. It makes them able to be trend, and become a trending topic.
Have you ever watched one of your favorite shows and seen the #hashtag sign.
#bachelor #americanidol #storagewars #resurrection.
It could even be a funny commercial.
#budweiser #puppylove #redbull
Those allow other engaged users online to see what everyone is saying and it allows you to trend within the social media platform you are using.
Point being: I can go on twitter and post this
“Absolutely loved the #puppylove commercial by Budweiser! Probably one of my favorites of all time with Budweiser! Now off to buy a case of beer.”
On the marketing/advertising side Budweiser can go on twitter and search for all the trending hashtags #puppylove to see what everyone is saying about their business online.
The hashtag works really well and can help you gain visibility in the search world.
